Fregenal de la Sierra and Monasterio de Tentudía

The Templar Fortress of ‘Fregenal de la Sierra’ is the most touristic attraction here, built over the Arabic Alcazaba. The Parade Ground (Patio de Armas) has been reformed as an attractive Bullfighting plaza. Just next to it is the XV century ‘Santa María del Castillo’ Parish church. Another monument of great interest is the ‘Virgen de los Remedios’ Hermitage, patroness of Fregenal de la Sierra, around whose image we celebrate the famous Romería de los Gitanos, in late October.

In addition, in the Arab borough of ‘Calera de León’, we see the Monastery of “Nuestra Señora de Tentudía”, built in commemoration of a battle won against the Arabs by Pelay Pérez Correa, Master of the Order of Santiago. Legend has it that the captain, as he came to see that darkness was coming and hadn’t achieved victory yet, implored the Virgin shouting: “Santa Maria, detén tu día (stop your day)!”. According to tradition, the sun stood still in the horizon to allow the Christian troops victory.
