Alcantara

Alcantara

In Alcántara there are several places that the traveller should visit, such as the Roman Bridge (the tallest in Europe); built during the age of Emperor Trajano a couple of metres above we find the reservoir of José María de Oriol-Alcántara II, for the production of electric power, also the biggest in Spain for its length.

Being in Alcántara, we can get to know the Conventual de San Benito, headquarters of the Knights of the military Order of Alcántara. The convent is a National Monument, the same as the Roman Bridge, and free to visit. Also here we have the San Benito de Alcántara’s Foundation headquarters that every summer organizes the Classic Theatre Festival.

In Plaza de San Pedro (Square), between the Church’s façade and Iglesia de San Pedro’s church-head, you can find the modern monument dedicated to San Pedro de Alcántara, built by popular subscription. San Pedro de Alcántara’s church, of the XVII Century was erected on the site of the birthplace of the Saint, a long time ago.
